Mastrianni Music

The Mastrianni family has a long history when it comes to music.

The singing group known as the Mastrianni Four evolved after their mother encouraged a natural ability. Alfred (Sonny), Katherine, Mickey, and Mary Lou grew up with music and played together as a group. After a period of gratis entertainment, the group turned professional. They performed in theatres night clubs, picnics, and dances, and entered Vaudeville stage shows and minstrels throughout the Hartford area. They appeared at Hartford's Old State Theatre with professionals such as Sally Rand, and twice won the first prize at the Major Bowes show in New York City.

During World War II, the group appeared on the New Haven Green at bond rallies to raise money for the war effort, appearing with actresses Virginia Gilmore and Ann Rutherford, and actor Charles Laughton. The group was also asked to audition for the Eddy Cantor show.

When the war intervened, the momentum was lost and the group stopped performing. Although many years have passed, the members continue to enjoy playing and singing together, and passing on their joy of music to their many children and grandchildren.

We have some recordings taken off some very old 78 RPM discs that were cut with one of the very first home recording machines ever produced. As you can imagine, the records are not in good shape so don't expect Dolby Digital quality. These were recorded in the family living room where many of the practice sessions took place.

The Mastrianni home was a place where family and friends would stop by to catch up on the latest news, celebrate birthdays and holidays, and just to sing a few songs. Louise always had something on the stove ready to eat no matter what time of the day someone stopped in, and visitors were always welcome. Some of these visits were recorded on the family's record-making machine. The following is just a few of those recordings, along with some light-hearted moments at home.
